Kim Watkins is a Lecturer in the Pharmacy Division of the School of Allied Health at The University of Western Australia. She is also the proprietor of a community pharmacy. Kim recently completed her PhD, which investigated the implementation of clinical guidelines for asthma to community pharmacy. The scope of this research encompassed areas including pharmacy practice, primary care, asthma-management and implementation science.
Asthma continues to be a significant health problem in Australia. The burden of asthma manifests at the patient level as well as having substantial impacts on the community. Most concerning is the high mortality rate due to asthma in Australia, relative to international statistics. Kim’s PhD research highlighted the important role that community pharmacists can play in improving patient self-management of asthma, by providing guideline-based healthcare. However, it also emphasised the challenges with successful implementation of clinical guidelines to initiate practitioner and patient behaviour change.
Her ambition is to continue with translational research that will improve professional service provision in the community pharmacy setting, to enhance patient health outcomes. She looks forward to collaborating with researchers outside of pharmacy to bring new perspectives to her research ambitions.
Kim acknowledges the immense support she has received from the Asthma Foundation of Western Australia, The WA department of Health, AstraZeneca Australia, The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (WA) and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (WA Branch).
